Henman win ideal preparation for Australian Open

Tim Henman believes he has developed a mental sharpness which
will make him tougher than ever to knock over this season.The British number one clinched victory in the final of the Australian Hardcourt Championships, with Mark Philippoussis his victim, and then claimed he is feeling strong both on court and in his head on the eve of the year's first grand slam. After the 6-4 6-7 (8/6) 6-3 win, top seed Henman said: "There were a lot of aspects I was very pleased with. After losing the second set after a very good tie-breaker, that's when you have to draw on your mental strength."

Di Canio hails 'fantastic' United

Paolo Di Canio has spoken of his excitement at the prospect of joining Manchester United.

The 33-year-old striker is expected to complete a £3.5million move from West Ham to Old Trafford within the next few days.

He told the Sunday People: "Of course, everybody should feel very good when you listen to good words from Sir Alex Ferguson, one of the best managers in the world, talking about you and seeing you in his club and his team."


Taylor eyes number one spot

Darts sensation Phil Taylor is determined to win back his number one ranking after being crowned the 2002 Skol World Champion in Purfleet."The Power" went into the tournament as the world number two behind Alan Warriner but his 7-0 thrashing of Peter Manley at the Circus Tavern was still not enough to clinch top spot. However, Taylor's victory helped him secure his 10th world title and a cheque for £50,000, and he said: "My ambition now is to get my number one spot back. I'm heading for Eastbourne, which if I win that will put me back on top."
