General

I am a member of the Institute of Education's School of Mathematics, Science and Technology, and have a special interest in the teaching and learning of information technology in secondary schools.

Teaching

My major current teaching commitments are as Subject Leader for Information Technology within the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Module Tutor for the 'Design and Use of Interactive Multimedia' module of the MA in ICT in Education.

Previously I have also been:

  • Course Tutor for the MA in Information and Communications Technology in Education (summer term 2001; spring/summer terms 2000)
  • Module Tutor for the 'Learning with Virtual Worlds: models, data and control' module of the MA in ICT in Education
  • Responsible for the ICT component of the PGCE in Science Education
  • Course tutor for the MA in Science Education (1991-99)
  • Member of the Science PGCE team.

I also supervise research students in ICT and science education and have taught on a variety of courses in the Doctor in Education (Ed.D.) programme.

Research projects I have directed and/or participated in include:

  • Explanations of Material Change (Directed: funded by the ESRC)
  • Using Spreadsheets in the Teaching of Chemistry (Directed: funded by the EU ERASMUS/SOCRATES)
  • Children and Teachers Talking Science (Co-directed: funded by British Gas/Science Policy Support Group)
  • Teaching about Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect (Funded by the EU ERASMUS/SOCRATES)
  • Tools for Exploratory Learning project (Funded by the ESRC).

Overseas links and consultancies

Overseas work this year includes:

  • Invited speaker on the role of distance learning in the training of science teachers at the meeting 'Information technology and the preparation of school science teachers', organised by the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and sponsored by the State of Minas Gerais and the British Council.
  • Invited speaker on the role of ICT in Science Education at the conference 'Planning and Connecting in the Science Curriculum', organised by the National Education Institute, Slovenia.

In addition, I have carried out consultancies in the areas of information technology and/or science education in Brazil, Chile, China, Greece, Luxembourg, Slovenia and South Africa, and have had funded research and development links with France, Germany, Israel, Portugal and Spain.
