Start Making Your Webpage

1. Getting Ready

Adjust the window of the Internet Explorer (or Netscape) to take top half of computer screen - see Figure 2.1

Start Notepad (Click on the button, then Programs, then Accessories, then Notepad).

Adjust the window size of Notepad to look like a banner too. Refer to Fig. 2.1

make your computer screen like Figure 2.1. So you can alternate between reading my tutorial and doing your typing.

2. Creating the basic page

Open Notepad .

Type in the tags, I mean the HTML codes below. They make up all web pages.

<HTML> HTML code identifier.

<HEAD> open tag for Head section

<TITLE>the old man</TITLE> page title, displayed in the blue row

</HEAD> close tag for Head section

<BODY> open tag for main content section

His body content of your page

</BODY> close tag

</HTML> close tag. no more HTML. don't be fooled!

Save your document as WEBPAGE.TXT
Note: This means that you won't have to type these tags ever again.
Next time you start creating a page, you just open this file and then save as .HTML

Save As file name.HTML, e.g. yourname.html
Putting .html after the name makes it a web page

3. Looking at your page

Open a new window of IE by Click on File-New -Window

Resize this window and drag it over Notepad window

Open the file file_name.html by File-Open-Browse-double clicking on file_name.html.

What do you see? Where is "this is my name"

4. Giving your web page a name

The web page name is NOT the file name for saving or retrieving.
It is not the title of the contents either.
It is the Name that you want to appear in the blue bar when the viewer looks at your page. Like "this is my name" you typed.

1.      Open your web page
2.     Right Click
3.     Choose VIEW SOURCE (You can only do this with IE, not Netscape)
4.     The HMTL page will appear
5.     Delete the text between the <TITLE> </TITLE> tags.
6.     Type the name that you want to give your web page, e.g. your own name.
7.     Save
8.     Return to your Web Page
9.     Click on Refresh
10. Whatever you typed will appear in the blue bar.

5. Changing the colour of the page

Unless you give the page a colour, the colour will DEFAULT to white. To change the colour you must change the page's colour by using the BGCOLOR ATTRIBUTE. (Attributes go inside tags)

Open your web page
Right Click

Choose VIEW SOURCE
The HMTL page will appear

Find the <BODY> tag.

Place your cursor between Y and >
(DO NOT TYPE ANOTHER BODY TAG)

press SPACE bar and type BGCOLOR="GOLD"
(Note the American spelling and the quotation marks)

Save

Return to your Web Page

Click on Refresh

The web page should turn gold.

Well done!

Try some other colour names and see what happens
(A list of recognized colour names is given in the appendix)
