The World Wide Web (WWW) more commonly known as the Web is a 'branch' of the Internet and provides access to a vast amount of information through Web pages. Web pages can contain text, images, sound, video and other types of animation and are saved as files stored on thousands of computers around the world. Individual related web pages linked together are called a Web site. The Web may well be the largest and most complex single information resource across the world and it is growing at a breathtaking rate.

Simple Web pages can only contain text and special codes called tags, which determine how the text will appear. The codes used to determine how Web pages and their contents will behave form a simple computer language called HTML (HyperText Markup Language). This tutorial guide will show you all the code you need to create a simple web page using the programs that come with your computer, no additional programs are necessary. This guide will also show you how to use a browser to view your creations but if you follow the instructions in the accompanying booklet, you will be able to use the TEST button to test your creation.

The tutorial concludes with a question and answer session that will help to test and consolidate what you have learned about web page creation during the course of this tutorial guide. You will also find that stage 7; the final chapter in this guide has information sources that you will find useful to learn how to progress to more complex and adventurous web page creations.

An important point to note here is that the test.html page would normally be called index.html, as the first page a visitor sees would be the index page. But for this tutorial to be INTERACTIVE there cannot be two index pages in the same folder and as the first page of this tutorial is an index page the interactive page has been called test.html. When creating a web page for real (outside the context of this tutorial) the first page must be called index. If you want to use the page you have created during the course of this tutorial then you could first move or copy the file outside of the Learning HTML folder and rename it.

Now click on the home button above to begin your first creation using HTML code.

Good luck!
